Anyone know the status of BD-18?

Is it really a joke or what?

No, but if past results are any guarantee of future performance, it
will be a disaster. Jim Bede has never had a truly successful business
venture. All have imploded with dead people, crashed airplanes and
builders left with nothing to show.

Homebuilders are a gullible bunch.

Still interested?

1. Jabiru is a worst-of-breed scenario. A LyCon has parts availability
through the normal aviation channels, which are at airports. A general
purpose engine installation has parts support through car, boat, or
industrial places within easy access of most any airport. Jabiru? One
guy in the US, and he has a reputation already. (Or his predecessor
sure did.)

2. Spins anyone? That was a BIG debacle for Grumman American if you
recall. From the look of it Jim has not learned a damn thing in almost
40 years.

3. Since the MOST successful BD homebuilt has few builders today and
was at best a mixed success and almost every other Jim Bede homebuilt
was an unmitigated disaster-the 5 and 10 stand way out there-I would
have to conclude that despite my dislike of them and /or their products
Richard Van Grunsven's RV, or even the arrogant prick Alfred Scott's
mutated production Falco, would be better choices.

According to the website:

"The BD-18 has outstanding flying characteristics. A relatively high
cruising speed is belied by a modest landing speed. New pilots and pros
alike will enjoy its sweet and docile flying qualities."

Very interesting, since the "pictures" page only has computer generated
images, which makes me doubt that one has even been built, much less flown.

Next, I bet he'll be selling a kit for a single seater that gets 50 mpg,
goes 200 mph, and is fully aerobatic...

Nah, they already offer one of those...

Wasn't that the BD-5?

Oh, sorry, I thought Kyle said he'll be selling a kit that he *claims*
gets 50mpg, goes 200mph, and is fully aerobatic.

I love the fact that the web site claims that the BD-10 is out of
production because the jet engine used too much fuel, not because it
killed everybody who flew it.

I believe there are a couple of BD-10 surviving pilots, but I don't
think any still fly. I was told that none ever exceeded 400 KIAS
(without disintegrating) and that was thought to be the true VNE for
the aircraft.

Jim Bede is Exhibit A for the sort of person the civil tort system is
SUPPOSED to keep deterred from doing business. Doesn't work, does it?
He has no liability insurance and all his property is in some other
name. He's judgmentproof. No one will sue him because they won't get
any assets and he probably won't even give you the satisfaction of a
trial-he'll just default, as the judgment isn't worth toilet paper.

Others did, but by then the damage was done. Homebuilders are
trendies, and the 5 was out of favor. It's as well: it took more
skills to fly than the demographic afforded.

There's always some schmuck who talks out his ass without any real live
knowledge whatsover. Two BD-10's survive in airworthy condition. One is
owned by Fuel Fresh in Scottsdale, AZ. The other belongs to a museum in
Canada owned by aviation enthusiast David Carlaw, who is in the process of
getting it airworthy after it sat in another Canadian museum for a while.

That's why I said "I think".

You are the type expert: tell me, total ever flown, total fatalities,
total writeoffs nonfatal: DEMONSTRATED safe top speed: DEMONSTRATED
range: total kits delivered: total deposits taken: percent of the delta
(payments taken, kits not received) refunded. Also can you tell me
who all is still alive who flew it and their statements as to its
flying qualities?

If you feel as though these are unreasonable questions, please explain
why.

First you have to convince me why I should waste any more of my valuable
time with you. If you think _that's_ an unreasonable question, do explain
why. :)

Besides, I said you're the schmuck who claims so much knowledge of the BD-10
that you think you know how many people who have flown the BD-10 are still
flying. I didn't say I'm the type expert. There's at least one person who
hangs out here who knows more about the BD-10 than I do. But he probably
won't waste his time with you either, seeing as how you're on a mission to
**** off all homebuilders.

Bwah bwah bwah.

I'm essentially right, am I not?

I don't know the exact numbers but I know the BD-10 program was a
complete debacle. And I'm reasonably sure no one thinks it can go
transonic without coming apart, which is the key reason it's been
abandoned. If the basic aerodynamics were even in the ballpark, it, or
a similar aircraft, would be being actively pursued.

I have several friends who are homebuilders. They may not like a few
of the things i say but they understand I'm not against homebuilding,
but the errant notions being sold to people by hucksters and pegboy
airplane magazine writers. I suppose if I came out saying Amway was
bogus, you'd say i was against using soap.

You really must understand, Jaun has two people he worships, one is Jim
Bede and the other is Jim Campbell. I would almost bet he worships Jim
Jones too. Jaun has never been wrong about anything and if you don't
believe me, ask him. (At least he will never admit that he has been
wrong.)

Jim Bede is actually a technically competent engineer, or was at one
time. But he is also an incorrigible con man, much like L. Ron Hubbard.
If Jim was in a situation where he could only design and build
airplanes and not talk to anyone, not sell, not interact with the
public, and responsible people did the selling once the aircraft was
flight tested and proven to meet all the stated goals, he would
actually be able to do something useful to society. However, he refuses
to work in such a setting. As it is I look forwward to his obit, not
out of personal animosity but because he is only going to result in
more people being fleeced and more worthless half-built piles of
aluminum littering garages. And only embalming fluid will slake this
compulsion.

Last I heard he was trying to unload it. I have never seen any report
that it has ever flown but I haven't been trying to keep up either. I
suspect not.

I saw it advertised for sale somewhere on the Net.

Don't hold out, Jaun.
Give us the details.
Make us all jealous!

Be sure to rub in how many hours *YOU* logged in it.
Also brag about how much BD-5 time you have
racked up after all these many years, as well.
You're convinced you have the right stuff.
Make us all green with envy!
